Testing the meaning of four dutch pitch accent types

چکیده

The Grammar of Dutch Intonation (‘GDI’, [1]), the model I adopted to describe intonational phenomena, provides an inventory of accent-lending and boundarymarking pitch configurations for Dutch, but little is known about the factors influencing the choice within these two categories. The present study aims to provide some insight into this issue, by way of experimentally testing abstract linguistic propositions regarding the meaning of a number of accent-lending intonation patterns in Dutch. Two perception experiments have been carried out to test four form-meaning hypotheses and the results confirm the basic correctness of the semantic proposals.

The Meaning of Melodic Elements in Dutch

In the past four years a series of experiments was conducted to investigate functional differences among a number of Dutch accent-lending pitch configurations. Using the Grammar of Dutch Intonation [1] as a starting point, meaning hypotheses were derived from the linguistic analyses by Gussenhoven [2] and Keijsper [3]. Perception experiments—in which subjects matched situational contexts with t...

Experiments on the meaning of two pitch accent types: the 'pointed hat' versus the accent-lending fall in dutch

The aim of the present investigation is to find out more about the meaning of two Dutch melodic shapes: the default pitch accent or ‘pointed hat’ and the accent-lending fall. Can the meaning difference between these pitch configurations be better described as a difference in information status or as a difference in attitude? Subjects were presented with the two contours on short sentences in sp...

Semantic judgments as evidence for the intonational structure of Dutch

A perception task elicited judgments from 20 Dutch listeners involving a choice between a modal and a lexical meaning of three ambiguous words in Dutch. On the basis of descriptions in the literarture, it was hypothesized that the lexical interpretation is favored if (a) there is an intonational boundary between the ambiguous word and the following pitch accent, and (b) if pitch accents on eith...

Phonological markers of information structure: an fMRI study.

In this fMRI study we investigate the neural correlates of information structure integration during sentence comprehension in Dutch. We looked into how prosodic cues (pitch accents) that signal the information status of constituents to the listener (new information) are combined with other types of information during the unification process. The difficulty of unifying the prosodic cues into ove...

تکیه در زبان فارسی

Abstract: This research has been carried out in the framework of Auto segmental-metrical (AM) phonology to study the stress in Persian. Two types of abstract and concrete prominences were distinguished in which the first one refers to the stress and the second one refers to the pitch accent. Stress is assumed to be a lexical property of the lexemes, but pitch accent is assumed to be an intonati...
